Dr. Sylvanus Ly, DO

Sylvanus Ly, DO, is a family practitioner who specializes in sports medicine for young teens up through senior adults. He has extensive training and experience working with sports teams, including concussion management. An expert in diagnostics, Dr. Ly’s primary role is to assess and diagnose both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions. His team mindset comes into play as he shares treatment options with patients and allows them the freedom to choose what works best for them. His skillset involves conservative interventions like injections to help with pain. When surgery may be needed to correct an orthopedic injury, Dr. Ly provides referral to expert surgeons. Dr. Ly approaches every encounter listening to understand and moving patients toward their goal(s): less pain, improved function, weight loss, improved sport performance, being able to play with grandchildren or walking their dog.

A native of Houston, Dr. Ly feels at home in our Louisiana Sportsman’s Paradise where he personally enjoys walks, cycling, camping, hiking and rock climbing. He also enjoys cooking, making and drinking coffee, listening to and playing music, and listening to podcasts and audiobooks.

Dr. Ly earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Baylor University in Waco, with two minors in chemistry and film and digital media. At Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona, he earned a Master of Arts degree in biomedical science and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Dr. Ly completed the family medicine residency program and was cofounder of the sports medicine track at the University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center. This was followed with specialty training through the nation’s largest primary care sports medicine fellowship program at John Peter Smith Health Network in Fort Worth. Dr. Ly is board certified in both family medicine and sports medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), American Medical Association (AMA) and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
